Unwanted pregnancies, young mothers dropping babies in dumpsters, German efficiency and practical design: these are not things you should joke about. However, when KP mentioned at dinner the other night that (in her words) Denmark or wherever has post-office style drop boxes (the Babyklappe) where you can drop an unwanted baby into an incubator, I was incredulous. But it's true. And ridiculous. And terrifying.

Europe's been always on this cutting edge. Rousseau has a long passage in his Confessions dedicated to the imaginary lives of all the children he'd mailed through the door of his home town's orphanage. As with so much of those man's dreams, they're incredibly pleasant and comforting to contemplate, but miss what actually is going on with the humans. The babies had something like as much chance of surviving in the orphanage as they would in a plague epidemic.
