The Science of Sleep was way too depressing. We're essentially watching a young man begin his slide into full-blown schizophrenia.

Am I supposed to read these recommendations literally as "raves"? I liked History of Violence but no way I would rave about it. It took an action/kung-fu turn at the end that was rather implausible for the real-world scenario surrounding it. If they wanted to take the film in that direction they should've made the kung-fu killing a few notches crazier, in my opinion, or else just stuck to realistic drama.

Science of Sleep wasn't depressing, it had a happy end. Anyway, I thought it was more a schizophrenic film than a film about a schizophrenic guy.

Karsten & Ron - Well, take raves as shorthand for "won't be a complete waste of your time." If something is really compelling, I will probably have already written about it separately. And, I agree, History of Violence was pretty good, but not insanely good. The shift into violence (when Viggo Mortensen kills Ed Harris and the other gangsters in his front yard) is really good, I thought, but the Philadelphia scenes with William Hurt were a little ridiculous.

Similarly, The Science of Sleep wasn't overwhelmingly good, and a little twee at times (although I didn't find it depressing at all). I would rave about a lot of the visual work in the movie, in terms of props/sets and animation. Which were excellent.

So, that's it for the Raves list this month (which, you'll agree, is simpler than "The Won't Be A Complete Waste of Your Time List," even if less accurate).
